Ordinary Magic: 3½ Big Ideas to Create Fun

Managing the power of choice, with all its creative and spiritual implications, is the essence of the human experience. All spiritual teachings are directed toward inspiring us to recognize that the power to make choices is the dynamic that converts our spirits into matter, our words into flesh. Choice is the process of creation itself. - Caroline Myss, Anatomy of the Spirit

Today I ask you to choose Fun! Inspiration, joy and to be down right silly. One BIG HUGE TIP to getting unstuck - LAUGHTER.

Just as an apple a day keeps the doctor away or a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, so does laughter keep our hearts open and vitality centered + BALANCED. Laughter is the best medicine in creating ordinary magic. It puts the whole in holistic living and creates good health.

On a physiological level, good ole belly laughter triggers
the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and produces a general sense of happiness.

Dr. Lee Berk of Loma Linda University in California has studied the effects of laughter on the immune system for over sixteen years. To date his published studies have shown that laughing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, increases muscle flexion, and boosts immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease-fighting proteins called Gamma-interferon and B-cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies. In addition, research found that one-minute of laughter is equivalent to  ten minutes of cardio on a treadmill. WOW! Laughter truly is the best medicine in creating health and is the secret ingredient to creating a life of happiness.

I don’t know about you but I’ll never pass up the experience of happiness. After all it’s what I’ve devoted my life’s work to, learning to create happiness despite what life throws me way (written wit kur-splat sound effects in head). The art of happiness + supporting others in creating a life truly desired, is what I offer as a spiritual counselor, artist and writer, it’s what’s I’m good at and it just happens to be what my passion is all about. It’s the freak’n bulls’ eye!

We forget that as artists we are creators. We CREATE the experiences we want. We CREATE our responses to the experiences we don’t want.

Don’t want to feel frustrated, overwhelmed or worse still - stuck then create an ordinary magical moment by inviting laughter into your day.

You know when you’re in the presence of ordinary magic for it transcends you beyond the five senses and arouses your imagination.

Imagination is the doorway to ordinary magic and to those brave enough to cross its threshold lays an extraordinary Life, a life full of laughs. Magic comes in all forms and flavors and doesn’t have to cost a dime.

The awe of Magic is present when gazing the orange and pink hues of a sun set. The beauty of Magic is experienced when basking in the full Moon. You need only spend fifteen minutes within the Moon’s company to feel it’s renewing presence. That’s what Magic does – it renews our spirit.

Laughter does even more than that, it heals our body and creates a happy life.

What ridiculous moment can you remember that had you laughing? Do you remember a time when laughter turned into a down right hysterical moment? The type of moment that took you beyond laughing and into complete bliss? The type of bliss that had you gasping for breath and tearing?

When was the last time laughter worked itself over on you?

I’d love for you to describe a funny moment, what makes you laugh or ways you and your family have fun in the comments below, it’s sure to inspire others, increase smiles and before you know it have everyone laughing away, but here is a handful or ordinary magic tricks that I regularly use that invite happy times and laughs:

1. PLAYDATES - When was the last time you had a play date with family, friends or both? Some of my fondest childhood moments came from ritual Saturday playdates with close friends and family. These were kids + adult events that included:
  • Picnic
  • Barbecuing (in the south it’s called Barbecuing not grilling - even though we know it’s a sauce & not a cooking method. see - laid back)
  • Dick Clark’s Rock, Roll & Remember
  • Hot Tubs (that were used as pools)
  • Hide-N-Seek when the sun the went down. Olly Olly oxen free brought potato salad and A&W Root beer from the land of forbidden treats into S O O I E! It’s was at one of these events I learned, along with two other girlfriends and sister, how to burp and talk at the same time for added effect. It took an entire six pack and a minor belly ache to master the art my father was teaching.
Playdates are fun and relaxed and invited spontaneous giggles and the exploration of imagination. Where else could a captain in the navy receive the foresight and genius to entertain us with fizzy soda and a belly full of bloat? Playdates Rock for all ages.

2. TOOBING - water or snow it's guaranteed to fill your moments with belly laughter - especially when you spend it with people you love. learn more

bubbles, ordinary magic, how to inspire
3. BUBBLES - There is a fun and whimsy presence with bubbles unlike anything currently in existence on earth - EVER! Bubbles are the ingredients to magical moments.

  • Bubbles uplift the heart, lighten the mood and sprinkle magic upon any environment they float.
  • The holidays are one of my favorite times to incorporate bubbles into the decor sneak-a-peak here
  • Bubbles are the number one face cracker to turning frowns upside down - Hands Down!
  • Bubbles are kryptonite to Grinch and Scrooge like attitudes. If your party is ever crashed by those green sour spirits, act STAT, you don't want rotten attitudes to spoil the whole bunch. Nothing is more effective in getting the stink out than Bubbles! In such a case, I recommend 333cc's of glow stick (colors optional) to one cup of gitty-up bubble maker juice. Viola! Glow in the dark bubbles. Note: this requires the big guns, don't be afraid and don't hold back (now is not the time) invest in a proper fun making arsenal. I highly recommend the Chauvet B-550 - it's the King of it's class, and no not all machines are created equal. However, for those just starting out and opting for comfort over power then the Chauvet B-50 Lil' Bubbler is your only respectable choice.
  • Think I'm a bit crazed? About 5,000,00 people searched google alone last month, using the keyword bubbles, clearly at least 5,000,000 people know how to have a good time and I'm one of them. How about you?

Stephey, this was such an inspiration to read! Love the idea of laughter, the full moon and ordinary magic! AND the reminder that we create our responses to what happens to us... A great read!

We've been loosing it with laughter a lot this summer, but the reasons why are so based on internal humour that they'd take too long to explain here. But it sure is a catharsis!

Loved this post! And I have to share my own experience with the healing power of bubbles.
Years ago I actually used bubbles to quit smoking. I carried around the little wedding favor size in my purse and anytime I had a craving - bubbles! Out socially, in the car, after coffee etc. And it eventually worked! I've been a non-smoker now for over 5 years.
But the bubbles had a longer lasting effect. Now I crave them! And I still carry them with me - when I need to contemplate, bubbles. Cheer up a friend, bubbles. Add sparkle to a perfect afternoon, bubbles =)
Cheers to ordinary magic!

Hi SARA! Cheers to Ordinary MAGIC indeed! This is an awesome story of triumph through ordinary magic! I love it and talk about creative problem solving - wow! Bubbles DO have a lasting effect don't they...the art of mindful bubbling or bubble yoga could be a whole new genre that now only has major health benefits but pegs the fun meter too! Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your amazing story - from one bubbler to the next kudos + cheers! ♡ stephey

Love this post - truly, I don't think I could exist without laughter. It is one of my all time favorite simple pleasures and I am always looking for ways to get more of it in my life!

And love the story about bubbles, Sara! That's amazing! I quit smoking 4 years ago, (May 11, 2006) and wish I would have thought of bubbles!

I own a bubble machine, too! You just can't be too serious around one of those. :)

Hi Samos!
Your comment had me laughing a bit because it soo brought back some similar memories I had w/a horse - though the horse probably felt I was the one not cooperating. ON the inside I'm a cowgirl, super trick rider, on the outside bull in china shop. You're right, sometimes choosing to laugh instead of getting angry makes all the difference. Glad you liked the post and thank you for taking time out to stop by and say hello!
