Defining Magic: When was the last time you experienced Magic?

"It is the function of art to renew our perception. What we are familiar with we cease to see. The [artist] shakes up the familiar scene, and, as if by magic, we see a new meaning in it." - Anais Nin

Life is repetitive. Yes. The architect of repetitiveness designed life’s backbone, the sun comes up - the sun goes down, the four seasons cycle, the tide ebbs and flows, the moon waxes and wanes, all are examples to this uniformity. Within this uniformity lies a consistency and this consistency yields trust plus a sense of safety to the everyday – to life. We trust that the sun will rise and set; We trust that upon drawing breath in we automatically breathe out; We trust that summer, no matter how hot or long, will yield to winter and winter to spring and spring to summer, which brings us back to winter and trusting the loop again + again. I made my point. In this sense, we trust life and life happens with or without our input. I think this repetitiveness, though a blessing at times can be a challenge.

When was the last time you experienced Magic?

I view Life as a challenge when over indulging repetitiveness. This creates a mundane experience. I am reminded of that old adage saying, "All good things in moderation." I especially apply this sentiment to monotony. Unnecessary monotony can lead to a humdrum life experience which eventually yields depression and an over all pessimistic attitude. Yuck. It is for this reason I suggest regular doses of MAGIC.

Just as an apple a day keeps the doctor away or a spoonful of sugar helps the  medicine go down, so does Magic keep our hearts open and vitality centered in wellness. It can also keep your cheeks sore from laughter. When was the last time you surrendered to fun? When was the last time you couldn’t breathe due to laughing?

When was the last time you created Magic?

I was recently reminded of the positive influence Magic instills when deciding to dust off my bubble machine and enjoy the spring air. I sat outside my deck with a cup of coffee as the bubbles took flight. It wasn’t long before their iridescent hues memorized me and lightened my mood. Little minutes more, I was swept away with inspiration, and the Muse hasn’t left. I find myself renewed, motivated and focused, all of which are signs of being marked by Magic. The early morning light, the songs of mocking birds, the cool breeze, the iridescent hues of bubbles, the sunlight sparkling stars on their surface, the cup of warm lavazza – all Magical. A simple moment, a new twist to an early morning gifted me my joie de vivre. No, bubbles are not my Joie de vivre but simplistic beauty, inspiration and humor are. What’s sillier than lavazza and bubbles? Yet, this simplicity stirred within a peace that grows. It was during this moment that I wanted for nothing and wished I could bring that feeling to everyone. Nothing would make me happier, for then no one would suffer loneliness or worse still death by monotony of routine.

Magic comes in all forms and flavors and doesn’t have to cost a dime. The awe of Magic is present when gazing the orange and pink hues of a sun set. The beauty of Magic is experienced when basking in the full Moon. You need only spend fifteen minutes within the Moon’s company to feel its renewing presence. That’s what Magic does – it renews our spirit. It renews our sense of vitality. It instills in us a lust for life. It holds the power to inspire us. It instills courage within us to experience the impossible dream. It empties us of all burdens. Its presence is felt when we draw our breath deep. This yields the ultimate experience of relaxation. It points our attention to blooming buds and lulls us comfy with the sound of our favorite tune. Magic is the best kept beauty secret. It takes years off the body, softens our face and gives an instant glow. O’Magic.

Magic is the only thing that can lead you to your Joie de vivre and this is the cure for all that ails the heart. Magic is felt verse seen. Magic is best when experienced. You know when you’ve been in the presence of Magic for it transcends you beyond the five senses and arouses within you imagination.

Imagination is the doorway to Magic and to those brave enough to cross its threshold lies an extraordinary Life tailored to you and your senses.

What are some of the ways you engage magic in your life? In your creations? Does your art provide you a doorway into a magical realm? If so, what do you experience there that you can not experience anywhere else in your life? OR does your art work provide magical portals to those who collect it? DO you need support in finding magic, well, this is one of the concepts I typically engage in a one-on-one.

Love this! And wow, I think I want a bubble machine. My son and I blow bubbles (the old fashioned way) at least once a day...it is part of our play outside routine! But it is still magical. Hmmmm, I find magic outside mostly. Just little things like birds at the birdfeeder or the way the sky looks. It always happens when I'm not trying to find it.

I love bubbles too, song birds, and newborn babies to name a few. There are so many magical wonderful things to behold. Thanks for reminding me, just like the bubbles, birds, and babies do.

Thanks for your wonderful comment! I can't think of a better routine to stave off monotony. This will be a sparkly memory for him from childhood.
I too have some great old school bubble wands. I recently bought a copper star and butterfly from a craft fair. They make circle bubbles.

If you put food coloring into the mixture you can catch the bubbles on water color paper and make bubble art. It's fun - especially w/kids, messy but fun.

Hi Kristy. Thanks for the comment. I love that it inspired you to think of the things you love - feels like a Julie Andrews song! What great inspiration to take into illustration.
